General Description of the Office of the Mayor
The Mayor is the head of the Executive Branch of Government for the City of Camden. Reporting to the Mayor are Directors and Departments consisting of: Business Administrator and Administration, Health and Human Services, Public Works, Finance, Utilities, Development & Planning, Fire and Police. Also reporting to the Mayor is: The Law Department, and Emergency Management Coordinator.
The direct duties and responsibility of the Mayor is as the chief executive and administrative officer of the city as per Ord. No. MC-1766 of the Camden Code. The Mayor shall:
- Enforce the Charter and ordinances of the city.
- Supervise all of the departments of the city government.
- Appoint all officers and employees for whose election or appointment no other provision is made by Charter or ordinance.
- Appoint Judges of the Municipal Court, with the advice and consent of the Council, as provided in N.J.S.A. 2A: 8-5, and appoint such additional clerical assistants as may be necessary to the Municipal Court and to supervise and perform such administrative duties as may be necessary for the proper functioning of such Court.
- Supervise and direct all necessary publicity and public relations functions of the city.
- Exercise any act empowered under law to preserve and protect the public health, safety and welfare.
- Appoint with the advice and consent of City Council, the members of the various boards, commissions and authorities created by law or ordinance.
- Create advisory bodies which the Mayor deems necessary and convenient and to appoint the members of those advisory bodies.
- Organize ad hoc working groups of city employees to perform special projects and supervise tasks not specially assigned to the various departments.
