A construction permit is permission to do most kinds of work on a dwelling or other type of commercial or industrial building. The purpose of the permit is to allow our inspectors to observe the progress of the work to be sure it meets code. The permit consists of five different Subcode sections as needed. They are Building, Electric, Plumbing, Fire, and Elevator.

Requirements- To obtain a construction permit one must come to Room 403 in City Hall. An application describing the work to be done must be filled out. After the application is completed it is reviewed by the appropriate Subcode official(s). If it is rejected the applicant is notified of the reason. If it is approved a clerical person processes it, the applicant is notified of the cost and to pick up the completed permit.

Construction permits are required when:

  • You construct, enlarge, repair, renovate, alter, reconstruct or demolish a building or structure.
  • Change the use of a building.
  • Work that does not require a permit:

    • painting, carpeting in residential structures
    • replacement windows and doors of the same size openings
    • storm windows
    • rain gutters
    • wall paper
